A New Young & Restless Mystery Brings Together Ashley’s Alters and Jordan’s Reign of Terror

Imagine that your mother’s psyche has splintered into several alternate personalities, each one more out-there than the last. Then imagine that, at the same time, your father has been targeted by a whole different madwoman, an agent of chaos hell-bent on vengeance for a decades-old perceived wrong. You would be absolutely drowning in drama, right? There would be no way around it.

But don’t tell that to The Young and the Restless’ Abby Newman.

Though both sides of her frontburner family are being put through the wringer, Ashley and Victor’s daughter remains mystifyingly removed from the collision of those life-or-death goings-on. You would think that she would be right there with Uncle Jack and Aunt Traci, moving heaven and earth to ensure that Mom gets the help that she so desperately needs. It would only be logical if Abby was freaking the freak out over the risk that Jordan presented. And yet she hasn’t been.

Ashley’s ex-husband Tucker, of all people, has shown greater interest in her wellbeing than her daughter. And Jordan didn’t even bother to poison Abby along with Victor, Nikki, Victoria and Nick. (Guess she and Adam got a pass since Nikki isn’t their mother.) The only thing that has really weighed on Abby lately is the fact that boo Devon expected her to vote with him in a Chancellor-Winters board meeting. So we’ve got crazies wreaking havoc on both sides of her family, and that’s where the show has put her focus.

It’s nonsensical and silly, and speaks to a desperate need for the character to get a reboot. What does Abby want out of her career, her relationship, her life? The Naked Heiress storyline of eons ago carried all the weight of whipped cream, but at least during it, we had a clear picture of Abby and her agenda. As it is, she’s now left to sort of float across the canvas making little to no impact as she does.

Melissa Ordway has proven that she can handle anything that the show throws at her, from snarky comedy to heavy drama. So make a choice, a real choice — any choice — when it comes to her legacy character, and turn her loose on a plot with higher stakes than which of her rich friends and/or relatives gets to drink from the World’s Best Boss coffee mug.
