We guess it was only a matter of time before Days of Our Lives EJ went off the deep end after learning the truth about Jude. We never thought he’d actually want to raise another man’s child as his own, what with his whole obsession about the DiMera bloodline, but that was before he caught Nicole planting a kiss on Eric.

Now, he’s just in survival mode — at least when it comes to the survival of his and Nicole’s marriage. Because there’s no way forcing Sloan into turning Jude over as Nicole and EJ’s child is going to be good for him. And actually, it’s not going to be good for his marriage either!

As Sloan warns EJ on Tuesday’s episode: “You’re only delaying the inevitable.”

EJ and Sloan share a tense look

Even if he pulls this off without a hitch, the truth will come out. He has got to realize that, especially since he just witnessed that with Sloan’s baby theft. By doing this, he’s guaranteed to lose Nicole, full stop. They don’t have a chance to come back from this.

But Nicole’s not the only one who’s going to be both elated and devastated when this all comes out. Eric’s life is going to be turned upside down… and then flipped right back! In fact, about all EJ’s done is ensure that Eric and Nicole will be pushed right into each other’s arms, not just as parents to Jude, but as spouses who were lied to, manipulated and betrayed.

Their lives with each other will come together just as their lives in Salem crumble apart. And that’s all but guaranteeing that if Nicole leaves Salem with Jude, Eric will likely go with her. Why wouldn’t they cling to each other after learning the people they trusted the most betrayed them?

Eric and Nicole embrace.

And that’s maybe not a bad thing for them. If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last quarter century it’s that “Ericole” never work — at least not when they’re in town. But maybe if they’re both somewhere safe and far from the drama of Salem, raising Jude together, they have a chance at happiness.

The whole situation — onscreen and off — is tragic, but maybe their characters can get a happy ending together. These days, that may be the best we can ask for.
