The inconsistencies feel like they’re piling up on Days of Our Lives, but there were still a few cute moments and one particularly powerful one this week. We’ve supposedly solved Li’s murder, planned out Konstantin’s revenge and pushed Leo to the brink of spilling all… but overall, May hasn’t been hitting with the same punch that February did.

The Leo Problem

I did a lot of head scratching this week — especially where Leo is involved. He told Eric that he had something to tell him and mentioned to Nicole that he was surprised EJ “hadn’t told her” yet. But instead of being curious or suspicious, Eric and Nicole just dropped it with little more than “Oh, that drunk Leo, so silly.”

Outside the DiMera mansion, EJ grabs Leo by his jacket

And then there’s Leo not catching on or wondering why EJ wants to keep his own son’s kidnapping a secret. Or EJ not telling Leo he could have the money if he left town! I guess Leo can be chalked up to greed and inebriation (and I now they hinted that he feels something is wrong, but can’t figure out what) but this all feels like common sense being thrown out the window in order to drag this out just a bit longer.

Fighting Words

I’m not of the “kids should be seen and not heard” idea, or the “in my day, teens respected their parents” persuasion, but my eyes just about bugged out of my head with Holly on Friday. Nicole’s no saint and back before Holly’s ODing, she was pretty blatantly neglecting her daughter. But my heart kind of broke for her when Holly spit out, “All the babies you lost were lucky because they never had to deal with you as a mother.”

In her office, Marlena embraces an emotional Holly

And Arianne Zucker’s performance cut even deeper, from the horrified, hurt look on her face, to that moment when, even after she’d been gutted, she tried to do the only thing she could think of and hug Holly. Love Holly or hate her, I’m continually blown away by the confrontations between her and Nicole.

Plus, Holly regretted it right away and ran straight to Marlena to talk… while Nicole ran straight to the bar. And Eric’s lips. (I’m looking forward to angry EJ’s reaction of either blowing up or plotting to hurt Eric.) I saw some folks comparing Holly to a teenage Sami and that’s the kind of thing you want.

I have a feeling that they’re making this relationship so intense and fraught that they’re setting up a rift between them so that if Nicole leaves town when Zucker exits, Holly opts to stay behind with… Eric? Maggie?

Fraud

I could’ve sworn that last week John and Steve had a plan for Konstantin, now suddenly Maggie’s got her own plan to set him up to embezzle. Wouldn’t that kind of put her at fault for the embezzling if she did this planning for it to happen?

Or what if he doesn’t take the bait? Or takes it all in one swipe and skips the country? This seems like it could blow up in her face.

A distressed Maggie faces a somber John and Marlena in their living room.

What they should have done is have Maggie fool all of us and Konstantin until the last minute when she turned the tables on him and revealed she’d been plotting against him the whole time. But that would have only worked if they’d made Kon more subtle, so that while we knew what he was planning, it was not blindingly obvious to everyone on the show. In other words: If they’d written him as a real character and not a parody of a villain.

So Many Questions

I wrote a whole thing on why I don’t think Gil killed Li, but what are your thoughts? Also, the reasoning they’re coming up for it is even more absurd than I thought it would be. He went to the apartment to assault Ava and, not finding her, killed Li instead? What?

Stefan pointedly stares at Paulina, who look up at him from her desk.

Now that Stefan got EJ fired, any bets on who’s next to take the DA role and be the one to set Gabi free? Because that seems to be what they’re paving the way for any day now: Gabi’s return. But when was She actually convicted?? Because now they’re talking about overturning that. I’ve been assuming they’ve been holding her all this time awaiting trial, but I don’t recall them actually ever mentioning it.

And while we’re on the Gil/Clyde/drug thing, what are they trying to do with Abigail’s journal? Are they rewriting history to make Clyde’s murder of her intentional in a way to somehow… bring her back? Because there was absolutely no other point to it, other than to get Abby involved in current story to pave the way for her return.

Irredeemable

Xander’s scavenger hunt was a bit underwhelming, but it was also ridiculously cute, especially with Victoria’s role in it. Also, we saw the baby!! We’re getting babies! And I love that the ring and diamond were ethically sourced. I love Xander. Who ever thought we’d be here back when he first showed up? Now if only Alex had the same transformation.

On one knee, Xander holds out a ring box to a hesitant Sarah.

Every time I think  he’s becoming more likable, the show proves me wrong. He called Maggie “lonely and needy” and then wanted to know when the Hortons are moving out of his mansion.

Plus, the buying spree is obnoxious. Didn’t he have money before? It’s not like he didn’t have access to his family fortune, and he worked in the C-suite at Titan, even if he wasn’t always the CEO. Why is he acting like he spent his life poor and just got money for the first time ever?

And I have no idea where he and Theresa are at any given moment, but half of that I feel like is just inconsistency. Who wants to be with whom? I’ve lost track of where they are. I think they have too.

Surrounded by delivery boxes at their apartment, Alex holds out a square wooden box to Theresa. She marvels at it.
