On May 8, General Hospital legend Kin Shriner took to Instagram with what sure sounded like a farewell message. “I started out confused,” he said, referencing a headline among the photos attached to his post, “and still confused. Where is Scotty Baldwin?
“Well,” he concluded, “we had a great ride, for damn sure!”
Ordinarily, we’d be horrified and hard-pressed to imagine General Hospital without Shriner. But he’s freaked us out like this before. In May of 2023, he tweeted that Scotty had been written off and thanked fans for their decades of support. In August of 2022, he upset his followers with a tweet about “how I was treated by [the show] after 45 years.”
Obviously, neither occasion marked the end of his going-on-50-year-run as daytime’s most rascally attorney. (Review Scotty’s bonkers life story here.) Heck, Shriner exited before, and even appeared on Rituals, Another World spinoff Texas, (“a giant blunder,” he called that move), As the World Turns and The Bold and the Beautiful, and still came back. Along with Lynn Herring and Jon Lindstrom, he even spent a few years away headlining the General Hospital offshoot Port Charles.
Also, for what it’s worth, Scotty was just on this past week and is likely to be sometime love interest Lucy Coe’s date to Brook Lynn and Chase’s wedding. So perhaps Deception’s legal adviser is merely being rotated off of the canvas again for a spell. Or perhaps we’ve completely misunderstood Shriner’s post in the first place. No one ever said we were bright.
Update: Yeah, we fell for it again. On May 11, Shriner clarified on X that “‘Where is Scotty Baldwin?’ is what I get asked daily, and I say I am still there. I am shooting next week.” So whew.
