Young & Restless Exclusive: Bryton James Laments Devon’s Road Not Taken — and Teases the Twist That Could Send Him ‘Off the Rails’

Over the years, The Young and the Restless has thrown just about every twist you could think of at Bryton James. Devon has carried on with his stepmother. He’s donated sperm to a dear friend. He’s hooked up and settled down with that same dear friend. He’s even stared down a lion.

Not even Victor Newman has done that!

But there remain a few storylines that James would have liked to have played — and still might get to. For instance? “I always thought that Devon having a kid would come through fostering, just because that’s where he came from,” he tells Soaps.com. At some point, “I would like to see him interact with or be there for someone who has been through that same situation.”

For sure, it would do his adoptive parents Neil and Dru proud.

James, who is going for this third Daytime Emmy this year, also hopes that the powers that be someday revisit an idea that was “thrown around years ago: a drug storyline” in which Devon gets in over his head. “That would have been pretty deep and exciting to get into.”

James would also be more than open to exploring the influence that Tucker has on his son. Even just DNA-wise, “maybe Devon has a little bit of his biological dad in him,” he muses. That might explain why Devon cheated on first girlfriend Roxanne with “Aunt Tyra,” trysted with Hilary when she was wed to Neil, and cheated on Amanda with the then-very married Abby. “Devon could get himself in a lot of trouble.

“There are so many avenues you can go down on a soap, especially with a character like Devon,” he adds. “He has the world at his fingertips.”
