Things have slowed down to a snail’s speed on Days of Our Lives and stories are starting to suffer for it. But there may be light at the end of the tunnel as we seem to be building up to one explosive christening that could drag half the town into it. And after much contemplation, we may have figured out Konstantin’s plan for revenge!

Time Crawl

Imagine my surprise when on Wednesday, the miracle that happened last Monday and started the Friday before that with Abe and Paulina both getting cured was referred to by Johnny as happening “last night.” I know Valentine’s Day stretched out for awhile, but good Lord, Days, this has been a long 12 hours.

No wonder we still haven’t seen anything on Everett, Stephanie and Jada. Sure, it’s been weeks for us, but it’s only been… carry the two… probably less than a day in Salem.

Facing Stephanie at the Salem Inn, Jada's mouth is open mid-explanation while forcefully pointing at Everett. Stephanie studies a photo as a frowning Everett purses his lips.

Don’t expect things to speed up, either. Apparently, Jude’s christening is “tomorrow,” but we won’t be getting to it until next Friday — and likely won’t be seeing the fallout until the following week. I’m fine with (and in fact, prefer) stories not being resolved as quickly as possible, but we have slowed things down to a crawl artificially and I know I’m feeling it.

Party of the Century

Since we’re on the topic of the christening, the show has been building up to this like it’s a major wedding. Heck, if half the people who say they’ll be there show up, it’ll be better attended than any recent nuptials!

Holding a bundle of blankets that's supposed to be Jude, Nicole grins at Sloan. Sloan offers a polite smile. Eric rolls up his shirtsleeve as he watches from the other side of the apartment.

So there better be something explosive happening at it. Maybe a few somethings! Spoilers next week look like Holly may finally admit that the drugs were solely her doing and the truth about Jude may finally come out. At the very least, it should get us back to decent cliffhangers (don’t worry, I’ve got plenty to say about that below) and give us a major event that it feels like we haven’t gotten in ages.

And if Nicole and Sloan’s run-in leading up to it on Friday is any indication, I’m really hoping it’s going to be fun. They’re both fully, wonderfully and obliviously inappropriate with each other.

If Jude wasn’t secretly Nicole’s, her whole “If we’re going to be part of each other’s lives” spiel was kind of obnoxious. Nicole, you don’t have to be a part of Sloan’s life. There’s no rule that exes need to be involved in each other’s lives, especially if they’ve got a history of cheating and their present spouses aren’t comfortable with it. Holly aside, Nicole and Eric do not need to find reasons to keep circling each other. And no, I’m not letting Eric off the hook either here.

In the park, Holly and Eric smile down at Jude's stroller.

And Sloan? “I dug deep looking for forgiveness for you kidnapping my son. But the truth is, I haven’t found it. I don’t think I ever will.” I almost choked on my coffee when she said that. The projection!

Check, Mate

Look, I appreciated Stefan’s talk with Chad, “the good DiMera.” It was sweet, it was thoughtful (I blame the writers for downplaying the fact that Stefan assaulted Abigail/”Gabby”) and I can see how Stefan could be feeling trapped by his choices. He’d want to make amends with the one sibling who hasn’t totally tried to stab him in the back as he prepares to face the consequences of his actions.

Stefan studies a chess board in the interrogation room

And I enjoyed that through the moroseness, it sounded like Stefan was starting to take some of his dad’s lessons to heart. He’s playing chess once again, rather than just reacting to threats and feeding his own greed. But then we jumped right to learning what his plan was and it turns out he recorded EJ admitting to helping him escape.

So what was the point of running to Ava in a panic, or all that supposed drinking he did as he spiraled? Why did he act with Chad like he was saying his goodbyes as he braced to face up to what he’s done? (I’ve got a separate theory about that and it begins with an “A” and ends with a “bigail.”)

He didn’t record EJ accidentally, then, after wallowing in misery, realize, “Oh! I can do something with this!” He recorded EJ with an escape plan in mind, so there’s no reason for him to go off the deep end like he did. And did I miss something with that chess game? Did Stefan bring his own board or did he borrow the Salem PD’s? I’m assuming all police precincts have chess boards, naturally.

The Next War

Either way, I’m hoping when they work everything out about who gets what, EJ ends up with DiMera and loses the district attorney job. He’s a total jerk right now, but I like the idea of him being in charge of DiMera, so if they can actually force him to focus on that, great. And it will be even better if it puts him in place for whenever Xander finally learns he’s Victor’s son and takes over Titan.

Those two facing off against each other on the corporate front could give them both a chance to play dirty and embrace their darker selves without turning them into kidnapping, murderous villains. Corporate raider is a better fit and maybe we could finally get that DiMera/Kiriakis war brewing.

As far as the whole secret heir thing, at least the show finally seemed to remember Konstantin and Theresa’s plan. That’s… something? I know I got tired of it awhile back and was happy for the break as Theresa focused on Tate and Konstantin focused on John, but weeks of ignoring it seemed more than a little silly.

But can we just wrap it up, please? If they’re not going to even show Alex in any sort of role as heir or running Titan or any kind of conflict between him and Xander, then there is no point to keeping this going.

Cliff Dives

Last week’s equivalent of a cliffhanger ended with John overhearing Steve and Marlena talking and then… it kind of fizzled out on Monday. Oh, John growled at Steve a bit, but we could’ve gotten the two of them in a fight or shouting match or something more exciting. John was more like a kicked dog who wants to apologize and turn himself in for… doing something while brainwashed?

I get it, knowing vaguely that he did bad things in a past life he doesn’t remember is one thing, but finding out that he was responsible for the death of an innocent is another. But do any of us believe he actually killed Catharina? Personally, I think they should let it happen, but I don’t for one second think it did.

Marlena made a good point bringing up how turning himself in for the crime we aren’t even sure he committed would mean leaving his family. John’s kind of being selfish here. “Let me abandon my family for something I don’t remember and didn’t have control over 40 years ago.” If Harris can get over what he did the other year, then come on, John.

And Konstantin forgiving him after John’s heartfelt apology is surprising (also, I’m sure, a total lie), but is it really cliffhanger material? A real cliffhanger would have been Kon finally using that stupid card to turn John into The Pawn and telling him to kill his loved ones. What is his revenge? Has he been pushing John to apologize so he can say he forgives him, then go “Psyche! Just kidding!”
