With his mother’s health suddenly an issue on The Young and the Restless, Billy has begun moving heaven and earth in hopes of convincing ex-lover Lily to help him oust her brother Devon from Chancellor-Winters. It hasn’t exactly made for riveting television, worrying about how the future of this mega-company will reflect on this incredibly rich woman’s legacy. Even Jill should be like, “Big whoop. I married my way up from manicurist to boss lady. That’s an awfully comfortable arrangement of laurels to rest on.”

But, because Young & Restless likes to pretend that nothing is as important as who sits in the big chair at its various conglomerates and that an individual’s sole purpose for existing is being the big kahuna, this is the story with which we are stuck. Ultimately, what it boils down to is ego — and isn’t that an attractive quality? Billy’s ego has sold him on the notion that his mother’s ego needs to be stroked by him running the show with Lily, and to hell with Devon.

It is, in short, ugliness dressed up as altruism. What makes Billy’s efforts even more galling is his complete and total disinterest in the fact that, as he’s purportedly shoring up Jill’s legacy, he’s running roughshod over Katherine and Neil’s legacies. Would Katherine be pleased to know that Jill’s son is working overtime to pink-slip her grandson? Would Neil be like, “Way to go, man!” if he was around to learn that Billy was trying to give Devon the boot? No to the nth degree!

So in the end, we’re left with another plot that revolves around Billy and his here today, gone tomorrow wants. It’s a terrible look for the character, whose missteps are many and varied, and if Lily gets suckered into his cockamamie plot, it’s just as bad or worse for her. Do you agree?
